Mary Poppendieck, Poppendieck.LLC:  MARY POPPENDIECK, a Cutter Consortium Consultant, is a seasoned leader in both operations and new product development with more than 25 years? of IT experience. She has led teams implementing lean solutions ranging from enterprise supply chain management to digital media, and built one of 3M?s first Just-in-Time lean production systems. Mary is currently the President of Poppendieck LLC and located in Minnesota. Her book Lean Software Development: An Agile Toolkit, which brings lean production techniques to software development was nominated for the Software Development Jolt Award in 2004.
Tom Poppendieck, Poppendieck.LLC:  TOM POPPENDIECK is a principle in Poppendieck.LLC, assisting organizations improve their software development capabilities. He has held positions of IT Architect, Supervisor, and VP of Product Development at various Twin Cities companies. Prior to that he was a Physics Professor and Director of Academic Computing at Hamline University. He is co-author of Lean Software Development: An Agile Toolkit, which brings lean production techniques to software development.

Why Lean Software Development?

For over 50 years, companies have used lean techniques to simultaneously improve quality while decreasing cost and delivery time in manufacturing and service operations. Why not apply these principles to software development? Unfortunately, this is much harder than it sounds. There is a big difference between routine operational processes and development processes which deal with unique problems. While there is broad agreement that waste should be eliminated, it is not clear what constitutes waste in a development process.

This workshop will help participants identify and eliminate the real waste of software development. You will learn practical tips and strategies for applying the most important lean techniques of customer focus, process flow and data-based decisions to your software development process.

Intermediate: This program is designed for managers and team leaders who play a role in software development. It will be particularly useful to those looking beyond conventional approaches to sofware development.
