With Internet/intranet accessibility, emerging industry standards, and increased demand for inter-enterprise integration, current workflow management systems must undergo major changes to respond to a changing market, provide flexible, scaleable implementations, and support multinational organizations. Workflow management also has the potential to provide a flexible context in which to integrate enterprise applications and to manage the integration of heterogeneous system components to compose enterprise applications from more discrete, heterogeneous system components. These systems will enable the further integration of agent technology and process improvement tools.
