Overview
OOPSLA'07 solicits research papers that present substantiated new research or novel technical results, advance the state of the art, or report on significant experience or experimentation. Papers should report significant contributions to the exploration, study, use, and understanding of programming in relation to systems, languages, and applications.

OOPSLA has been the forum for the introduction and dissemination of many key programming paradigms and methodologies. Submissions are welcomed on proposals for new paradigms, exploration of well-established paradigms, and critical evaluation of accepted practices.

Papers may address any stage of programming, including requirements, design, implementation, and testing. Papers may focus on processes and methods in addition to tools and techniques. Of particular interest are papers with perspectives that cut across the traditional boundaries of languages, systems and applications in the development of software systems. Papers may also extend to paradigms beyond the traditional concept of object-oriented programming.

A successful research paper meets all of these criteria:

  • significance: Motivate why the research is important or useful. Explain what problem it addresses.
  • novelty: Extend the frontier of knowledge. Explicitly relate your research to previous work.
  • correctness: Critically evaluate and support your claims with proofs, an implementation, examples, or experiments.
  • clarity: Organize the paper well and write clearly. Make sure you support your claims.

Awards
OOPSLA 2007 continues a long-standing tradition of recognizing the best student-authored paper of the conference. The Program Chair will select the winning paper among those commended by the Program Committee. The paper will be announced at the conference. Eligible papers will describe the work of one or more students, one of whom must be the primary author. Authors will indicate eligibility as part of the submission process.

OOPSLA 2007 will also present an award for the most influential paper published 10 years ago at OOPSLA (OOPSLA 1997).

Submission Guidelines
Electronic submission of proposals is required through the OOPSLA submission system.

All papers must be submitted electronically in PDF format (or PostScript, if you do not have access to PDF-producing programs, but this is not recommended). Final papers must be in ACM SIGPLAN format, and this is recommended for submission as well. Papers must be set 10pt on 12pt baseline, both for submissions and final camera-ready papers. A template for Word and a class file and templates for LaTex are available; the LaTex class file and its templates are available from http://www.acm.org/sigs/sigplan/authorInformation.htm; select the 10pt template for LaTex; SIGPLAN is also making a Word template available for the three sizes, but it is available here and not (yet) at the SIGPLAN page. (Please visit this page for instructions on how to use the Word template file.)

PDF files must be created allowing printing, and must be able to be readily printed using a modestly configured color laser printer. Final camera-ready papers must be formatted to conform to the following ACM Proceedings requirements: Ten point font on 12 point baseline, two columns per page, each column 3.33 inches wide by 9 inches tall, with a column gutter of 0.33 inches, etc. You can save preparation time by using one of the templates from that page. Note that MS Word documents must be converted to PDF before being submitted.

Research Papers may not exceed either 10,000 words or 18 pages when formatted under the ACM format above. Length will be determined by applying a word count utility like Unix's "wc -w" to the result of using Acrobat's "Save as Text" option (figures may be omitted). Papers violating these guidelines may be rejected; contact the appropriate program chair if you have any doubts.

The reviews of the papers will be provided to the authors on April 28, and authors may submit a response to the reviews by May 1 for the purpose of clarification, correction, or elaboration. Responses will be limited to 500 words.

OOPSLA also provides a number of other publication venues and papers that are not accepted to the technical program may at the discretion of the committee be forwarded for consideration for Onward!, Essays, or Practitioner Reports.

Each research paper will be afforded a 30-minute speaking slot and allocated up to 20 pages in the proceedings.

Submitted papers must describe work unpublished in refereed venues, and not concurrently submitted for publication elsewhere (including journals and formal proceedings of conferences and workshops). Violation of this policy will result in rejection of the paper. See the SIGPLAN republication policy for more details.
