OOPSLA 2000 continues the tradition of quality and diversity in technical offerings. Here is a quick guide to the different kinds of sessions and events comprising the technical program:

  • Invited talks provide a forum for world-class speakers to present expert, yet generally accessible, accounts of important and timely topics.
  • Technical paper presentations discuss new research in OO languages, systems, and applications. The 26 technical papers were selected after a rigorous peer review of 142 submissions. Some of these papers present work that foreshadows the future of OO systems; others describe and analyze the underpinnings of common OO languages, design methods, and applications.
  • Practitioner Reports demonstrate how OO languages, systems, middleware, methods, and tools are used in practice. Some of these reports describe what it is like to adopt a new language, use a new methodology, or depend on a new tool. Others distill the experience of a number of projects. The reports describe both benefits and drawbacks of the approaches used on the projects.
  • Poster sessions present technical contributions in a more informal setting. Poster sessions contain some of the newest research, often still in progress. Authors are present to discuss their work, usually one-on-one.
  • Demonstration sessions similarly offer a chance to see software in action in an informal (and commercial-free) context. In many cases, demos show the software discussed in technical sessions, tutorials, and other presentations.
  • Panel sessions offer interactive presentations and discussions of controversial topics by expert panelists. The panels organized as “goldfish bowls” push interactivity even further – you are encouraged to step in as a panelist and join in on discussions.
  • The DesignFest is our most hands-on event. Participants working in teams design and implement solutions to an assigned design problem, and present their work at the DesignFest Wrap-up session at the end of the conference.

In addition to these, as well as Tutorials, Workshops, Exhibits, and social events, there are three embedded symposia at OOPSLA:

  • The XPO Symposium offers technical presentations on the convergence of XML, workflow, objects, and e-business applications.
  • The Doctoral Symposium provides a forum for graduate students to share ideas and receive guidance.
  • The Educators' Symposium includes presentations and discussions on teaching object-oriented in both academics and industry.

Finally, the co-located International Symposium on Memory Management features reports on new research in garbage collection and related issues in memory management.
